GETT is a new in field, environment specific hybrid testing system
developed by Maizex Seeds. The interaction between genetics and
environment is becoming more critical with the rapid advancements in
modern genetics and trait technology. Site specific testing allows
producers to evaluate multiple hybrids on individual environments.
A water soluble tape that holds up to 50 hybrids is wound onto a spool and
then planted with a conventional planter. The process takes about 20
minutes, much more efficient than conventional replicated yield trials.
Seeds of each variety are placed into the tape by a uniquely designed
robot. Perfect spacing and small plot size help reduce trial variability
resulting in more accurate data. The tape trial can be planted at any
location in the field by removing the seed hopper from one row, removing
the seed tube and replacing them with the GETT spool and tube.
Conventional planting equipment is used to plant the trial so any
producer with a John Deere, White or Kinze planter can easily and
quickly put in his/her own trial.
GETT has been tested over several years using experimental design and has
proven to produce statistically valid hybrid comparison data when
comparing to conventional replicated yield trials.
The patent pending system is unique to Maizex and is only available to
producers in Ontario and Québec this year.
