It has been one of those springs where all of the requests for rain from 2016 finally came and in large quantities. Here in North Dumfries township we are very good at producing another cash crop called gravel. The land in this part of the country can take a lot of moisture before we see any ill effects. Fields went into the fall of 2016 very dry and the light snow accumulation over the winter had people chatting about dry conditions early in April. This particular field of MZ 4525SMX was planted the first week of May and has not looked back. The advanced stage of this corn shows the advantages of good natural drainage in a wet spring, but don't get too excited just yet. It is important now that Mother Nature is fair over the coming weeks and gifts us a few more timely rains. The downside of having all of that gravel underneath is that when the tap shuts off, things can change in a hurry. Stay tuned for the outcome in just a few short months.
